Is a Samoyed Puppy Right For Me?
Please read this before reserving a puppy from me. No breed of dog is perfect for everybody, and I want to make sure you are making the right choice of breed for your family.
The Samoyed is a beautiful dog, with a wonderful temperament, who is not a house guardian but loves everyone who comes into your home or that he meets on the streets. Don't expect him to guard your home, but he will bark to alert you to the presence of strangers.
That beautiful white coat doesn't stay that way on its own. If you let the puppy play outside and ignore combing and bathing, in a few months you will have a mass of mats and oozing sores under the mats. The dog needs a bath every month or two and a weekly (or more frequent) combing of at least an hour a week. I will teach you to groom, but you must do it regularly or hire someone to groom the dog.
Samoyeds were bred to share the work of the family. They helped with hunting, herding, pulling sleds, and slept with the children to keep them warm in the cold Siberian climate. They are not happy with limited human contact. If you want a backyard dog, this isn't the right breed for you.
Obedience training is a requirement. The sled dog must be able to make decisions for itself and selectively disobey for its own safety and that of the rest of the sled. This type of dog will be stubborn and can take over the leadership in a home if not obedience trained. You must learn to be the pack leader.
Do they shed? Of course! We vacuum daily and still have white fluff on the floor. If you can't stand a stray hair in the meatloaf, this is not your breed of dog.
Most Samoyeds bark, dig, and chew. Especially if bored. They must be kept active and busy both mentally and physically, at least a few times a day. Puppy chewing can go on for two years.
Samoyeds can not be trusted off leash without a fence. They are primarily sled dogs, and are bred to run great distances. And you can't keep up. Keep the dog safely leashed or behind a fence.
Samoyeds live 12 to 16 years. Think ahead in your life plans. Can you commit to caring for this dog regardless of what comes up in your life for that length of time? If not, wait until you can. Make a lifetime commitment to your dog. But if you need to return the dog you bought from me, I will always accept him back (no refund). My contract requires that you return him to me at any age if you can't keep him.
